There's an old song that goes: "to the world you are just someone, but to someone you are the world."

Our lives are intertwined with others – we all have people who depend on us, such as our spouses and children who we provide for with our love, income and even future planning such as life insurance.

Yet, living a more valuable life is not just about financial provision. Simply put, living a more valuable life is about finding new ways to develop ourselves with skills or attitudes that help us make a difference to those around us, and inevitably lead to a better life for ourselves. Old Mutual iWYZE presents 5 ways to live a more valuable life...

  1. Broaden your horizons to connect with new people
Broadening your knowledge base is not hard – read some articles and blogs about topics you've never considered before, befriend a colleague who is different from you, watch a TV show that's based around a different culture to your own. Pretty soon, you'll be able to make conversation with new people – broadening your network and making new and interesting friends and connections along the way.
  2. Be prepared to help
We all have unique skills. Sometimes, a helping hand can make a world of difference to someone else. Spending five minutes to brainstorm a challenge at work with a colleague or even helping out with a chore at home will not cost you anything, but it will buy you goodwill and enhance your reputation. Plus, you never know how they might be able to help you in future.
  3. Positivity is more important than you think
Being a positive person will not only add to a social atmosphere, but it's guaranteed to make more people feel good about themselves, and feel good about being around you. Even when you're not having a great day, try and respond positive when someone asks you how you are doing – it's not like laying out your problems to them will solve it. Compliment people and never underestimate the power of a smile.
  4. Give time
Being in a position to give is so much more rewarding than receiving. We don't all have money to give, but we all have time. No matter how busy you are, if you try hard enough it is possible to find an hour a week or even less to help out at a local charity or community project. Pick something close to your heart, whether it's coaching a junior sports team, volunteering at a hospital, soup kitchen project or anything else – you'll be donating time but the reward to yourself will be even greater.

  5. Take care of yourself
One of the most important factors to keep in mind is yourself and your immediate family. This is not selfish, but essential. Make sure to invest in yourself and your own happiness by spending the necessary time to work out, eat healthy and laugh with loved ones. This will provide you with the balance and self-love you need before you can spread the love to others.
